Musicians, podcasters, voice actors, and remote workers build them because treating an entire room to the same standard costs far more and often isn't allowed in a rented space.

What a DIY Soundproof Booth Can and Can't Do

A soundproof booth blocks sound transmission in both directions: traffic, neighbors, and household noise stay out, while your voice or instrument stays in. It does this through mass, airtight sealing, and structural decoupling — not through foam glued to walls, which only reduces echo inside a room and does nothing to stop sound passing through.

The same construction serves different jobs. Built around a desk, it works as a DIY office pod for calls and focused work in a noisy home. Built tall and narrow, it becomes an office phone booth for one person. Built around a mic stand, it's a vocal booth. Unlike an open cubicle, which only screens sight lines, a booth is a sealed enclosure — that's the entire difference in how it performs.

One expectation to set early: no DIY build achieves total silence. A well-executed booth turns a loud environment into a quiet, controlled one — enough for clean recordings and private calls. Chasing absolute silence leads to over-spending; chasing airtightness and mass leads to results.

Planning Your Booth - Size, Location, and Structure

Three decisions come before any purchase: how big the booth needs to be, where it will stand, and whether it should come apart later.

Size follows function. A voiceover booth needs room for a person, a mic stand, and enough clearance that the walls don't sit right at the mic. An office pod needs space for a desk and chair, which usually means a footprint of at least 4x6 feet. Cramped booths are unpleasant to work in and harder to treat acoustically, so err slightly larger if space allows.

Location determines how hard the booth has to work. Place it away from street-facing walls, shared walls with neighbors, and appliances. A corner of a quiet interior room gives the booth a head start; a spot next to a window facing traffic makes every layer work overtime.

Structure is where a soundproof booth for apartment use differs from a garage or basement build. In a rented apartment, the booth should be fully freestanding — no fasteners into the building's walls, ceiling, or floor. That protects your deposit, and it's also better acoustically: any rigid connection to the building structure gives vibration a path around all your soundproofing. A modular frame built in bolted panels can be taken apart and moved when the lease ends.

Weight deserves a check too. Double drywall, framing, and dense barrier material add up fast. On upper floors of older buildings, keep the footprint modest and confirm the floor can carry a concentrated load of this size.

Materials and Tools You'll Need

Every material on this list serves one of five jobs: adding mass, decoupling surfaces, absorbing sound inside cavities, damping vibration, or sealing air gaps. Building a soundproof booth means covering all five — skipping one undermines the other four.

Step-by-Step Building the Booth

The build runs from structure to sealing in a fixed order: frame, decoupling, insulation, barrier, sheathing, seams, door, floor. The order matters because each layer covers the fasteners and joints of the one before it.

1. Build a Freestanding Frame

Frame the walls, ceiling, and a floor deck from 2x4s, exactly like a miniature room. Build each wall as a separate panel and bolt the panels together so the booth can be disassembled and moved. Keep the whole structure self-supporting — it should stand without touching the room's walls or ceiling.

2. Decouple the Interior Surfaces

Mount resilient isolation clips to the studs, snap furring channel into the clips, and plan to hang all interior sheathing from that channel instead of screwing it to the frame. This breaks the rigid path that vibration would otherwise travel through the studs. Decoupling is the step most DIY guides skip, and it's a large part of why professionally built booths outperform amateur ones.

3. Fill the Cavities with Insulation

Fill every wall and ceiling cavity with fiberglass or mineral wool batts. The insulation absorbs sound energy inside the structure and stops the cavities from acting as resonant drums. Fit the batts snugly without compressing them — crushed insulation absorbs less.

4. Add the Mass Loaded Vinyl

Hang mass loaded vinyl across the framing, covering it completely. MLV is a limp, dense barrier that blocks airborne sound without adding thickness, which is exactly what a small booth needs. Overlap the seams by a couple of inches and seal every overlap and edge — an MLV layer with gaps performs like no MLV at all.

5. Sheath with Double Drywall and Damping Compound

Screw the first drywall layer to the furring channel, apply Green Glue Soundproofing Compound across the back of the second layer, and hang it over the first. The compound forms a damping layer between the two sheets that converts vibration into small amounts of heat, and it noticeably improves low-frequency performance — the range where small booths struggle most. Sheath the exterior of the frame with a layer of drywall, MDF, or plywood as well.

6. Seal Every Seam

Run acoustical sealant along every joint: wall-to-wall corners, wall-to-ceiling, wall-to-floor, around any cable pass-through, and around the door frame. Air gaps are the single most common reason a finished booth underperforms, because sound travels through openings far more easily than through solid material. Use a dedicated acoustical caulk rather than standard caulk — it stays flexible instead of drying out and cracking.

7. Hang and Seal the Door

Install a solid-core door in a properly framed opening, then fit door gasket seals: a perimeter seal along the jambs and head, and a door bottom seal at the floor. The door is always the weakest surface of a booth, and the gaps around it matter more than the door itself. A sealed solid-core door outperforms an unsealed premium door every time.

8. Float the Floor

Set the floor deck on resilient underlayment or rubber isolation pads so the booth never sits rigidly on the room's floor. This blocks footstep and vibration transfer in both directions — important in apartments, where a rigid floor connection carries your noise straight into the unit below. Carpet or a thick rug inside the booth finishes the job.

Ventilation Without Sound Leaks

A sealed booth needs continuous airflow, and a straight hole through the wall would undo the sealing work — so booth ventilation always runs through a baffled path. Without it, a small enclosure becomes stuffy within minutes and unusable within an hour.

The standard solution is a quiet inline fan connected to flexible ducting with several bends. Each bend forces sound to reflect and lose energy, while air flows through freely. Lining the duct interior with absorptive material improves it further.

A baffle box does the same job passively: a small chamber of MDF with an offset inlet and outlet and absorptive lining inside, so air zigzags through while sound gets trapped. Build one for the inlet and one for the outlet — air needs a way in and a way out for real circulation.

Whichever route you choose, place the inlet and outlet on opposite sides of the booth, and seal around the duct penetrations with the same acoustical sealant used on the seams.

Treating the Inside of the Booth

Isolation solves sound getting in and out; it does nothing for how the booth sounds inside. A small sealed box with bare drywall walls reflects sound harshly, and recordings made in it sound boxy and unpleasant. Interior absorption is the fix.

Mount sound-absorbing panels on the walls at head height around the microphone position, and add coverage on the ceiling. Fabric-wrapped fiberglass panels handle the vocal range well, and in a booth-sized space even modest coverage changes the character of the room completely.

Keep the two jobs straight: panels absorb reflections inside the booth, while the mass, sealing, and decoupling in your walls block transmission through them. Panels alone will never make a booth soundproof, and a perfectly isolated booth without panels will sound bad. A finished build needs both.
